The Black Angel A Charlie Parker Thriller John Connolly Books

John Connolly is an unbelievable writer and storyteller. What I like about him and what makes him stand out in the sea of mystery writers is his under theme of fallen angels and spirituality. The prologue to this book tore at my heart. It is something that I will never forget - perhaps it reminds me of a very old film with Mimi Rodgers, The Rapture.

The other remarkable thing about Connolly's characters is that they are ordinary men. Charlie Parker, and his friends Louis and Angel. What incredibly creative characters with such fascinating back stories. These people wrestle with very human emotions. I can't say enough about this author. Just when I thought I had read some of the best, I discovered John Connolly. I do plan to down load all his Charlie Parker books now.

The Black Angel A Charlie Parker Thriller John Connolly Books Reviews

I don't enjoy theological discussions. After a while I skipped many paragraphs just to get through the book. I became a Charlie Parker fan by reading the first book in the series. I was hoping that the religion story line in his second one would end there but was disappointed when it delved deeper into the third. I am continuing onto the 4th book, lured in by the preview of a lost plane.
I have been reading the Charlie Parker series nearly nonstop and what began as a mystery series gradually moved in a supernatural direction. A spattering of magic is something I much prefer to what might be called pure fantasy (think Game of Thrones vs. LOTR). I loved this book and the three stars I gave it were not as much about it as it was about the edition itself. I don't think I can add much to the praise other reviewers heaped on this story but needed to comment that, with its plethora of characters in this huge book, it desperately needed to have the X-ray enabled so a reader could keep track of them. , you let me down.
This thriller goes over the top at times. It's reminiscent of Dan Brown's work re searching for early church artifacts. The dark twists are vintage Connolly, as are pages laced with tooo many words to move the plot along. This could have been much shorter and crisper for the effort. Louis's cousin is a troubled young woman. She ran away from home to join a pimps's cadre of prostitutes. She goes missing and her mother looks for her in NY, discovers her "profession" and consults Louis. She'd counted on Louis to take care of his relative. Louis and Angel act as muscle for Charlie Parker, the troubled protagonist. In their search, they come across a fat man named Brightwell, who is searching for something entirely different. He and his evil cohorts are looking for a statue that dates to the early Sedlec Monastery in eastern Europe. A lot of history is blended into this novel and I like that. If ossuaries and violent murder are not your cuppa tea ... just be warned.
From start to finish, this novel has been the best thought proking novel i have had the pleasure of reading. There are several subjects mentioned in this book I have done my own personal research on. Some of the research I have done has proved fruitful and other endeavors have not. Which has left a sense of wonder and horror at the same time.

Ever since I first started reading this book I have had times where I have wondered about what is real and what is fiction in my daily life. I have had taken nightly walks under the darkest of skies after I have read a few chapters, and I've wondered about the shadows that I've seen at the edges of the forest near my home. More than likely it's just my mind playing tricks on me but I nonetheless am always left with that feeling "what if?."

The overall premise of the story (for me anyways) is the struggle between a person(s) and evil. The nature, origins, and motivation behind such malevolence is often a very dark & contoversial debeate. A debate that should be left to experts because it's a subect that's very serious and dangerous.

Mr. Connelly has written a wonderful and awe inspiring story. As I sit here writing this review, I wonder about the dark.
I am really enjoying this series. I think that Connolly bit off a bit too much with this one, however. It read to me more like a Preston/Child supernatural thriller than an installment in this gritty noir series.

That isn’t a bad thing really but it made this book feel different to me that than the ones in the series. In The Black Angel, Mr. Connolly provides a history of the source of evil that has permeated the first two books and fills out a mythology of sorts to explain it all. In the first four books we are certainly aware of another plane of existence that keeps bleeding into the real world or at least Charlie Parker’s real world, but the style was mainly gritty noir. The supernatural elements were given a lesser stage as mainly it was the unavenged dead that sought him out and plead to him to bring justice to their killers. Later, once he learns of and starts to travel The White Road creatures less (or more?) than human noticed him and began to seek him out. Well, in this installment they find him and he realizes that his mission might be much bigger than he thought.

I am not sure what this means for the rest of the series. I have no intention of stopping, that is for sure.
