I got a taste of Kelly Harper's writing in the LOL Romantic Stories box set, and I liked what I read and decided to read more. I got to the halfway point in this book and gave up. Too many things are wrong with this story. Kelly writes in first person which requires a skill she hasn't mastered. Spelling and grammar need work - bare instead of bear, I instead of me, and breath instead of breathe, question marks where there's no question, etc. Every page had errors (get some good beta readers!). And then, there's the story line, OMG where to begin? A spoiler ahead...The story is kinda far-fetched to begin with. New girl in town gets dream job w/big perks, everyone likes her instantly, aunt lets her drive her corvette, controlling mother suddenly lets her do whatever she wants, etc. Maggie and Haden are supposed to be these two damaged souls that wouldn't know real damage if it smacked them in the face! Maggie has been fantasizing about Haden since the story began, and finally halfway into the book, he is about to kiss her for the first time, and she has a flashback and panic attack because she saw her father tell her mother that he was leaving and he didn't love them. I'm sorry, but, NO WAY! That isn't even psychologically possible! I know this is fiction, but come on, it has to be somewhat believable. This is too far fetched and I'm halfway through the story, and if the other supposed secrets are as stupid as this, I don't have the energy to devote to such a waste of my time. I don't like the characters enough to care. Give this series a pass unless you're a teen who loves drama.

Ruined By You The By You Series Book 1 edition by Kelly Harper Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
New adult, coming of age, loss of virginity, set in Texas, a little clueless for an 18 year old, transplant from NJ (and I hate that she refers to our state as "Jersey" I know no one who actually says that), an 18-yr old should know how to at least google to find local bands, so I felt like that was a little unrealistic, ends in a cliffhanger
I bought this for "free" so I'm glad I didn't pay for this.
It's always been said, "Everything is bigger in Texas" and if that's true, I guess that would include live - epic love! Read the story of Hayden and Maggie and how they find each other, begin to trust, and finally give themselves over to love. When Kyle enters the scene...well I won't spoil it for you, dear reader, but let's just say there's a surprise ending!
I had mixed feeling when I read this. Abit cliche somewhat with all similar new adult genre are coming out these days...I don't see Maggie portrayed as having a "strong" character as viewed by Haden. She came across throughout the book as immensely insecure and indecisive. Leading up to her big secret reveal to Haden, it didn't evoke any feeling of "wow, she actually went through all that" so you really feel for her. I get what the author is trying to get across with that part...but her character's reaction to her past to freaking out at that moment with Haden just doesn't didn't do it for me. However, Writing structure and story flow wise, it is actually quite good. Needs work on creating a much greater emotional and stronger character development in all the characters than what it is now...I want to be emotionally invested in Maggie and Haden's relationship in the coming series...
first of all I would of never gotten the book if it wasn't a free read. second of all I just didn't connect with the characters. Maggie was a very annoying character who was always fighting her feelings and trying to push haden away. she was rude to him and then finally started to fall for him. she tells him her secret which I think no matter what wasn't that bad of a secret to begin with to allow to let her lead her life the way she did. you always think when one of the characters have a big secret from there past you expect it to be juicy. nope not this one. and her mother what can I say about that. the girl is grown and still allowing her mother to tell her what to do and that was annoying all on its own. I just wanted to reach into the book and slap some since into both of them. as for haden now he had some secrets too that he didn't tell Maggie but the way the end of the book left them just made me mad. the least she could of done was sit and listen to him explain but of now she couldn't do that. I don't think I will be reading the other books in the series.
